History of Anglo-Saxon Culture

  • The Anglo-Saxons were made up of people who migrated from Continental Europe. They lived on the land from 450-1066
  • In between the time period, Britain was freed from Roman Rule and established its independent culture and society
  • One hundred years after Britain’s cultural establishment, Christianity was reestablished.
  • When the Romans ruled the Anglo-Saxons, other religions were forbidden
  • In the 7th century, minor territories began to form into kingdoms. One of the kingdoms that were formed was Mercia


Anglo-Saxon Culture vs. Modern Day Culture

Anglo-Saxon culture and the modern day culture is very different. Anglo Saxon culture was very passionate about English literature. All of their culture revolved around fate and poems. This was because it was hard to live in their time period. Also, the Anglo-Saxon culture established Christianity. The modern day culture we live in today is completely different. The two cultures are practically irrelevant to one another. The culture in modern day society revolves around social media and music.

When you think of today’s culture you don’t even mention English literature. Nowadays, story writing and plays are considered to be pop culture. One thing these two cultures have in common are their hero vs. villain stories. Beowulf was the foundation of Superhero comic books.
