Main Characters

Beowulf

His father’s name is Scyld. He also founded the Dynasty of Scyldings. He has a son who’s name is Healfdene. Also, he has a grandson named Hrothgar. Beowulf is the protagonist of the story. He’s also one of the main characters. Most of the minor characters worship him. The characters of the story believe that he has the strength of 30 men. He assisted Hrothgar against Grendel. Also, he killed Grendels mother and Grendel. He dies at the end of the poem succumbing to Dragon Breath burns.

Grendel

Grendel is the antagonist of the story. He is the terrorist who harasses the people of Dane Land. Rumors in the Poem indicate that he hates when people are happy or having fun because he cant participate. This is why he kills and eats people. He’s a descendant of Cain. He fought Beowulf twice in the story. The first time they fought as in the mead hall which led to his arm getting ripped off. The second time was when he was injured at his mother’s stronghold and he was executed by Beowulf.

Hrothgar

He is a Danish King. He was responsible for bulking the mead hall. The official name for the hall was Heorot(Heort). Grendel interfered with his people for 12 years. He’s  married to Weathmeow. He has 3 kids. He has 2 boys and 1 girl. Also, he’s lavish of gifts. He’s a devoted ledge lord and very appreciative to Beowulf. Also, he’s Beowulf’s grandson.

Grendel’s Mother

She’s evil. Her and Beowulf get into an intense fight. In the fight, Beowulf experiences not having the upper hand. Her lair is underwater. She commanded sea creatures that Beowulf fought underwater. During the fight, she seemed invincible. However, a giant sword pierced through her skin which killed her.

Wiglaf

His father’s name is Wihstan. He’s related to Beowulf. The poem indicates that Wiglaf is Beowulf’s cousin. After Beowulf got back from the fight with Grendel’s Mother, Wiglaf was one of the people who created an oath to Beowulf. He was one of Beowulf’s comrades. In Beowulf’s last battle, he aided Beowulf in the fight against the Dragon. Wiglaf landed the last strike that killed the dragon. When everyone earn away when Beowulf fell to the dragon, Wiglaf remained beside him. When everyone came back he shunned them.

Minor Characters

Aelfhere- A kinsman of Wiglaf

Aeshcere- Confidential friend of King Hrothgar, Elder brother of Yrmenlaf and he was killed by Grendel

Beanstan- Father of Breca

Breca- Beowulf’s opponent in the famous swimming-match

Cain- Ancestor of Grendel and other monsters

Daeghrefn- A warrior of the hugs, killed by Beowulf

Ecglaf-Father of Unferth, taunts Beowulf

Ecgtheow-  A widely known Waegmunding warrior

Ecgwela- A king of the Danes before Scyld

Elan- Sister of Hrothgar

Eanmund- Son of Ohthere and brother of Eadgils

Eofor- A Geatish hero who slays Ongentheow in war

Eormenic- A gothic king, from whom Hama took away the famous Brosinga mene  

Eomaer- Son of Offa and Thryto

Finn- Kin got the North-Frisians and the Jutes

Fitela- Son and nephew of King Sigeumnd

Folewalda- Father of Finn

Freaware- Daughter of King Hrothgar

Froda- King of the Heathobards

Garmund- Father of Offa

Guthlaf- A Dane of Hnaef’s party

Halga- Younger brother of Hrothgar

Haereth- Father of Higelac’s queen

Healfdene- Grandson of Scyld and father of Hrothgar 

Yrmenlaf- Hrothgar’s best friend and younger brother of Aeschere
